I'm taking a Spanish class and it's interesting, but sometimes it also kicks my trash. Of course, the up side is that it helps me appreciate certain things about speaking English. Like this:
1) Inanimate objects don't have gender.
This one I absolutely love. I really don't understand why the pencil or the painting or the telephone has to be male or female. It's THE pencil, THE painting, THE telephone. "The" is a beautiful word.
2) There is only one form of "you."
Memorizing formal and informal and when you use them is just one more thing to keep track of. I understand respect and all that. I don't have a problem being respectful. I think I do that quite well with just the one form of "you."
3) No accents!
I can't tell you how many little points I miss on homework and quizzes because I forget an accent, or put it in the wrong place. I don't understand how you distinguish where you put the darn things, and I think accents are just troublemakers.
4) Maybe it's obvious, but I already understand it!
Me llamo Amy, y me gusto hablar inglés.
