WAITER RANT

So far, 2009 hasn't been very kind to those of us who slave away at Outback Steakhouse in Layton. I try to be patient and empathetic when it comes to the guests at my table. I try to be as understanding as I possibly can. After all, you come out, you pay for a meal, you expect certain things. I GET THAT.

HOWEVER -- I am a serVER...not a serVANT. Big difference. So the next time you go out, think about this:

* A server in Utah makes $2.13 an hour, plus tips. This basically means we are making whatever you leave us and yes, I am working hard for that tip.

* A server is not the only one responsible for your food. I can put your order in on time, get all your special instructions right for what you don't want on your salad and what extra sides you want with your meal, and be there when your food should be up...and that still doesn't mean it will be there. If the kitchen gets ten tickets at once and the guys crash, THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT. We're all waiting!!! And trust me, it's MISERABLE for all of us (and probably more so for me, because I'm getting the evil eye from both you and the now not-so-pleasant cooks)!

* A server is not the one that stocks the kitchen. When we run out of something, we run out of something. It's not like I personally knew you were coming and what you wanted and told the kitchen manager to not have it there for you. I'll apologize until I'm blue in the face that we don't have croutons or bread or carrot cake and it still won't be my fault. But you'll take it out on me and my tip anyway.

* A server at Outback is required to run food to tables besides the three they are assigned to. Please realize that it's in your best interest that I help run other people's food. This means that your food will not sit in the window while the expo manager yells for food runners. You will get your food sooner. Just because you can't see me doesn't mean I'm not working to get you what you ordered.

Now this is nothing personal...it's just an occupational rant from a server who has had a frustrating start to this new year.

Happy 2009! Celebrate by noticing how much a server actually does for you!
